4Deshan Walks Through Guishan's Hall

Introduction

Clear sky, broad daylight: no need to point east and gesture west. But the moment makes its demands, and the medicine has to match the disease. So tell me, is it better to let go or better to hold the line? Here's a case to test it.

Deshan came to Guishan's place. With his bundle under his arm he walked into the Dharma hall, crossed from east to west, back from west to east, looked around, and said, "Nothing. Nothing." Then he walked out.

(Xuedou comments: "Seen through.")

At the gate Deshan stopped. "Still, I shouldn't be so sloppy about it." So he drew himself up, put on his proper manner, and went back in for a real meeting.

Guishan was sitting. Deshan held up his sitting cloth: "Master—" Guishan reached for his whisk. Deshan let out a shout, shook out his sleeves, and left.

Deshan turned his back on the Dharma hall, put on his straw sandals, and walked off.

That evening Guishan asked the head monk, "That newcomer from earlier, where is he now?"

The head monk said, "Right then he turned his back on the hall, put on his straw sandals, and went."

Guishan said, "Someday that one will build himself a grass hut on a lonely peak and sit there cursing the buddhas and damning the ancestors."

(Xuedou comments: "Piling frost on snow.")

Verse

Seen through once. Seen through twice. Pile frost on snow and you nearly take the fall. The cavalry general charges the enemy camp: how many ride back out whole? He bolts away fast. He won't be let off. On the lonely peak, sitting in the weeds. Bah!
