7You Are Huichao
Introduction
The one phrase before a word is spoken: not even a thousand sages can hand it down. If you've never seen it yourself, it's as far off as the other side of the universe. And say you nail it before any sound is made, leaving everyone on earth with their tongues cut out. You're still not the real thing. That's why they say: the sky can't cover it, the earth can't hold it, empty space can't contain it, sun and moon can't light it up. Where there is no Buddha, it alone is king, and even that barely scratches the surface. If you're not there yet, then break through on the tip of a single hair, blaze out in every direction, free and easy with the teaching, beholden to nothing. Reach out and take whatever comes to hand, and none of it is wrong. So tell me: what is it you've got, that you can pull this off? And again: do you all get it? Nobody knows the warhorse, lathered from the old campaigns; they only want to retell the deeds that saved the age. Set that aside for now. How does Xuedou's case run? Look at what comes next.
A monk asked Fayan, "Huichao here, asking you, master: what is Buddha?"
Fayan said, "You are Huichao."
