23The Summit of Wonder Peak

Introduction

Test jade with fire. Test gold against stone. Test a sword on a hair, water with a measuring rod. But a monk: how do you test him? One word, one phrase. One move, one setting. A step out, a step back, a push, a shove. You want to see who runs deep and who runs shallow, who faces you and who turns away. So tell me, what do you test with? Here's a case. Look.

Baofu and Changqing were walking the mountains. Baofu pointed and said, "Right here is the summit of Wonder Peak."

Changqing said, "It is. Pity."

(Xuedou tagged this: "Out walking the hills with this fellow today, and what's he after?" And he added: "A hundred, a thousand years from now, I won't say there's no one. Only that there'll be precious few.")

Later someone brought this up to Jingqing. Jingqing said, "If it weren't for Sun, you'd see skulls strewn across the whole field."

Verse

On Wonder Peak's lone summit the grass grows rank and wild. He plucks it, holds it out plain. To whom does he hand it? Had old Sun not told the true from the false, skulls would litter the ground, and who would know?
