35Manjushri's Three by Three
Introduction
Telling a dragon from a snake, jade from rock, a monk from a layman, settling doubt on the spot: without an eye in your forehead and a talisman up your sleeve, you'll miss it as it passes right by your face. Right now seeing and hearing are clear, sound and color nothing but real. So tell me: black or white? Crooked or straight? Standing here, how do you tell them apart?
Manjushri asked Wuzhuo, "Where have you just come from?"
Wuzhuo said, "The South."
Manjushri said, "How is the Buddha's teaching faring down South?"
Wuzhuo said, "In this declining age the monks barely keep the rules."
Manjushri said, "How big are the communities?"
Wuzhuo said, "Some three hundred, some five hundred."
Then Wuzhuo asked Manjushri, "And how do things stand here?"
Manjushri said, "Ordinary and holy live together, dragons and snakes all mixed in."
Wuzhuo said, "How big is the community?"
Manjushri said, "Three by three in front, three by three behind."
