51Case 51

Introduction

The instant you split things into right and wrong, your mind scatters and you lose it. Drop the gradual steps, though, and there's nothing left to grope for either. So tell me: letting go is it, and holding fast is it. When you get here, if there's so much as a single thread of "I figured it out," you're still mired in words, still bound by gimmicks and situations. That's all just clinging to weeds and hanging on branches. Even if you reach the place where you've broken free and stand alone, you're still gazing at your home village from a thousand miles off. Can you reach it yet? If not, then just chew on this plain, settled case. Here, look.

When Xuefeng was living in his hut, two monks came to pay their respects. Watching them approach, Xuefeng put his hand to the door, threw it open, planted himself in the doorway, and said, "What's this?"
One monk shot back, "What's this?"
Xuefeng dropped his head and went back inside.
Later one of the monks made it to Yantou. Yantou asked, "Where are you coming from?"
"Lingnan," said the monk.
"Did you ever get to Xuefeng's?"
"I did."
"What did he have to say?"
The monk told him the whole story.
Yantou said, "What did he say after that?"
"Nothing. He dropped his head and went back in the hut."
Yantou said, "Damn. I wish I'd told him the last word back then. If I had, nobody in the world could touch old Xue."
At the end of the summer the monk brought it up again and asked Yantou to explain.
Yantou said, "Why didn't you ask sooner?"
"I didn't dare take it lightly," said the monk.
Yantou said, "Xuefeng was born on the same branch as me, but he won't die on the same branch as me. You want to know the last word? Just this."

Verse

The last word — I'll spell it out for you: the moment light and dark stand paired as one. Born on one branch, they know each other through and through; not dying on one branch, they're cut clean apart. Cut clean apart — even the yellow-head, the blue-eyes, must be told apart. North, south, east, west, everybody, come on home. Deep in the night, together, we watch the snow on a thousand peaks.
