75The Wrong Blows

Introduction

A keen-edged sword lies out in the open. It can kill, and it can give life. There or here, it makes no difference. You win together, you lose together. Want to take it up and hold it? Hold it. Want to lay it down? Lay it down. But tell me: when there is no host and no guest, when no one is trading places, what then? Here's a case. Look.

A monk came from Master Dingzhou's assembly and arrived at Wujiu's place.

Wujiu asked, "How does the teaching at Dingzhou compare to here?"

"No different," the monk said.

"If it's no different, go back where you came from." And he hit him.

"There are eyes on the end of that stick," the monk said. "You can't just beat people any way you like."

"Today I've hit one," said Wujiu, and hit him three more times.

The monk walked out.

Wujiu said, "So somebody does eat unfair blows after all."

The monk turned around. "Too bad the handle's in your hand."

"If you want it, I'll give it to you."

The monk stepped up, took the stick out of Wujiu's hand, and hit him three times.

"Unfair blows! Unfair blows!" Wujiu cried.

"Somebody's eating them," the monk said.

"I hit this fellow too carelessly."

The monk bowed.

Wujiu said, "So that's how you'll leave, is it?"

The monk roared with laughter and walked out.

Wujiu said, "That'll do. That'll do."

Verse

Calling them in is easy, sending them off is hard. Watch close how they trade the blade back and forth. The diamond rock that outlasts an age can still be ground to dust; stand in the deep ocean and you'll dry it up. Old Wujiu, old Wujiu, how many tricks have you? Handing him the handle was far out of line.
