97The Diamond Sutra's Scorn
Introduction
Pick one up, set one down: that is not yet a master at work. Raise one corner and grasp the other three, and you have already missed the point. Though heaven and earth turn inside out, though every voice in the four directions falls silent, though thunder cracks and lightning streaks, clouds roll and rain comes down in sheets, lakes tip over and mountains topple, jars and basins pour out their water, still you have not said the half of it. Is there anyone who can throw the bolt on heaven's gate and swing the axis the earth turns on? Let's see.
The Diamond Sutra says: "If a man is treated with contempt, it is because crimes from a former life should have dropped him into the lower realms. But because people scorn him in this life, the crimes of that former life are wiped clean."
