1Zhaozhou's Dog

Zhàozhōu gǒuzǐ

A monk asked Zhaozhou, "Does a dog have buddha-nature, or not?" Zhaozhou said, "Wú."

Wumen's Comment

To practice Zen you have to break through the barrier the old masters set. Real awakening means cutting the mind's road off completely. Fail to break that barrier, fail to cut that road, and you're nothing but a ghost rattling through the weeds, clinging to the trees.

So tell me: what is the barrier? Just this one word, Wú. That is the whole barrier of our school, and that is why we call it the Gateless Barrier. Get through it and you don't merely meet Zhaozhou face to face. You walk hand in hand with every master down the line, eyebrow to eyebrow, seeing with their eyes, hearing with their ears. Wouldn't that be something?

Anybody want through? Then take all three hundred and sixty of your bones, all eighty-four thousand of your pores, and pack your whole body into one solid lump of doubt around this word Wú. Chew on it day and night. Don't read it as "emptiness." Don't read it as "yes or no." It should feel like swallowing a red-hot iron ball: you gag, you try to spit it out, and it won't come up.

Burn off every worn-out scrap of knowledge, every clever notion you've been carrying. Keep at it long enough and it ripens, and inside and outside fuse on their own. You'll be like a mute who has had a dream: you know it, but it is yours alone. Then all at once it cracks wide open, and you shake heaven and earth. It is as if you seized the great general's sword and now it is in your hand. Meet a buddha, kill the buddha; meet a master, kill the master. Right at the edge of life and death you come into total freedom, and you move at play through all the realms and forms of birth, completely at ease.

So how do you work it? Throw every ounce of your life into holding up this one word Wú. Don't let it break off, and it catches like a lamp wick: one touch of flame and it's lit.

Verse

A dog, buddha-nature. The whole command, laid bare. The moment you split it into yes or no, you have lost your body, lost your life.
