3Juzhi Raises a Finger
Ask Master Juzhi anything and you got the same answer: he held up one finger.
He had a boy attendant. One day an outsider asked the boy, "What is the heart of your master's teaching?" The boy held up a finger too. When Juzhi heard of it, he took a knife and cut the finger off. The boy ran off screaming. Juzhi called after him, and the boy turned. Juzhi raised his own finger, and in that instant the boy saw it.
As Juzhi was dying, he told the assembly, "I got one-finger Zen from Tianlong, and used it my whole life without running it dry." Then he was gone.
Verse
Juzhi made a fool of old Tianlong:
one sharp blade, raised alone, to test the boy.
The river-god lifted a hand, no great matter,
and split Mount Hua a thousand ridges deep.
Wumen's Comment
The place where Juzhi and the boy woke was not the finger. See that, and Tianlong, Juzhi, the boy, and you are all strung on a single thread.
