16The Bell and the Seven-Panel Robe

Yunmen said, "The world is so wide and open. Why, at the sound of a bell, do we put on our robes?"

Wumen's Comment

In studying Chan, whatever else you do, don't go chasing sounds and sights. Even if you wake at a sound or see your true nature in some shape or color, that is still ordinary. What you don't see is this: a real monk rides the sounds and rides over the sights, clear at every turn, deft at every move. Still, even so, tell me: does the sound come to your ear, or does your ear go to the sound? And suppose both the ringing and the silence fall away. How do you speak of it then? Listen with your ears and you will never grasp it. Hear the sound through your eyes, and only then do you come close.

Verse

Get it, and all things are one house. Miss it, and the ten thousand things scatter. Miss it, and all things are one house. Get it, and the ten thousand things scatter.
