24The Word "Buddha"示眾
師示眾云：「佛之一字，吾不喜聞。」問：「和尚還為人也無？」師云：「為人。」學云：「如何為人？」師云：「不識玄旨，徒勞念靜。」學云：「既是玄，作麼生是旨？」師云：「我不把本。」學云：「者箇是玄，如何是旨？」師云：「答你是旨。」
Zhaozhou said to the assembly, "The word 'Buddha' — I don't like hearing it."
A monk asked, "Master, do you still help people?"
Zhaozhou said, "I do."
The monk said, "How?"
Zhaozhou said, "Miss the deep point and you wear yourself out chasing quiet for nothing."
The monk said, "Fine, that's the 'deep.' But what's the 'point'?"
Zhaozhou said, "I hold to no fixed text."
The monk said, "That was the 'deep.' Now what's the 'point'?"
Zhaozhou said, "Answering you is the point."
