26Who's Doing the Reciting?示眾
師示眾云：「不得閑過，念佛念法。」僧乃問：「如何是學人自己念？」師云：「念者是誰？」學云：「無伴。」師叱：「者驢！」
Zhaozhou addressed the assembly: "Don't let the days slip past. Recite the Buddha's name, recite the teaching."
A monk asked, "What is the reciting that is my own?"
Zhaozhou said, "Who is the one reciting?"
The monk said, "No one keeps me company."
Zhaozhou snapped, "You jackass."
