65The Non-Buddhist Questions the Buddha

Introduction

Formless, yet it takes shape, filling all of empty space, vast and wide. Mindless, yet it answers, reaching every world without strain. Show one corner and he sees the other three, weighing the finest difference. Even when the blows fall like rain and the shouts roll like thunder, that is still not the conduct of one who has gone all the way. So tell me: what does such a person do? Here is a case to test you.

A non-Buddhist asked the Buddha, "I'm not asking about what can be said. I'm not asking about what can't be said."

The Buddha sat in silence.

The man bowed and praised him: "Your great kindness and compassion have parted my clouds of confusion and let me in."

After he left, Ananda asked, "What did that man realize, that he said he got in?"

The Buddha said, "A fine horse runs at the shadow of the whip."

Verse

The wheel of the mind has never turned; turn it, and it runs both ways at once. A bright mirror set on its stand splits the lovely from the ugly in an instant. Lovely and ugly parted, the clouds of confusion lift. Where in the gate of compassion could dust ever settle? Think of the fine horse eyeing the whip's shadow: a thousand miles into the wind, and one call brings it back. Brings it back, and he snaps his fingers three times.
