Introduction 垂示
當機覿面，提陷虎之機；正按傍提，布擒賊之略。明合暗合，雙放雙收，解弄死蛇，還他作者。
Meet it head-on, in the moment. Spring the trap that takes a tiger. Strike straight, strike from the side. Lay the snare that catches the thief. Match light with light, dark with dark. Release with both hands, gather with both hands, and play with a dead snake. Leave it to the one who can.
巖頭問僧：「什麼處來？」僧云：「西京來。」頭云：「黃巢過後，還收得劍麼？」僧云：「收得。」巖頭引頸近前云：「㘞！」僧云：「師頭落也。」巖頭呵呵大笑。僧後到雪峯，峯問：「什麼處來？」僧云：「巖頭來。」峯云：「有何言句？」僧舉前話，雪峯打三十棒趕出。
Yantou asked a monk, "Where have you come from?"
"From the western capital."
"After Huang Chao passed through, did you pick up his sword?"
"I did."
Yantou stretched out his neck, leaned in close, and shouted, "Yah!"
The monk said, "Master, your head just fell."
Yantou roared with laughter.
Later the monk came to Xuefeng. Xuefeng asked, "Where have you come from?"
"From Yantou."
"What did he say?"
The monk recounted the whole exchange. Xuefeng gave him thirty blows and drove him out.
