2Bodhidharma's "Vast Emptiness"

Introduction

Bian He offered up his jade three times, and it cost him his feet. Flash a glowing pearl at a stranger and his hand goes to his sword. Give a guest the host's seat and no one is in charge. Counterfeit goods sell; the real thing won't move. Rare treasures are no use here. So watch: I'll hold up a dead cat's head instead.

Emperor Wu of Liang asked Bodhidharma, "What is the highest truth, the holiest thing?"

Bodhidharma said, "Vast emptiness. Nothing holy."

The emperor said, "Then who is standing in front of me?"

Bodhidharma said, "No idea."

The emperor didn't get it, so Bodhidharma crossed the river to Shaolin and sat facing a wall for nine years.

Verse

Vast emptiness, nothing holy: the question came in miles off the mark. Win, and the axe swings past your nose untouched. Lose, and the pot shatters behind you; don't turn your head. Alone, cold, sitting at Shaolin, silent, upholding the whole law. Autumn clear, the moon a wheel of frost rolling on, the river pale, the Dipper's handle hung in the night. Robe and bowl passed down the line, son to grandson, and from here, for gods and men, both cure and disease.
