32Yangshan's Mind and Object
Introduction
The sea is the dragon's world; it dives and surfaces as it pleases. The sky is the crane's home; it flies and cries free as it likes. So why does the tired fish run aground in the shallows? Why does the dull bird hole up in the reeds? Is there any weighing of gain and loss here?
Yangshan asked a monk, "Where are you from?"
"Youzhou," the monk said.
"Do you ever think about it?"
"All the time."
Yangshan said, "The one thinking is mind. What's thought of is object: the mountains and rivers and land back there, the towers and halls, the people and animals, all of it. Now turn it around. That mind doing the thinking, does it hold all those things too?"
The monk said, "When I come this far, I see none of it at all."
Yangshan said, "That will do for the stage of faith. It isn't yet the stage of the person."
The monk said, "Have you nothing more to point me toward?"
Yangshan said, "To say there's more, or to say there's nothing more, neither one hits it. By what you've seen, you hold only a single strand of the mystery. Take your seat, put on your robe, and from here look into it yourself."
