44Xingyang's Garuda

Introduction

The lion brings down the elephant. The garuda snatches the dragon from the sky. Even beasts and birds know who outranks whom; a monk had better know host from guest just as well. So tell me: the man who dares defy the throne itself, how do you pass sentence on him?

A monk asked Master Pou of Xingyang, "When the great sea-dragon rises out of the ocean, heaven and earth go still. When it comes at you face to face, then what?"

Xingyang said, "The garuda, king of the birds, rules the whole sky. Who in here is going to stick his head out?"

The monk said, "And if I did meet someone who stuck his head out, then what?"

Xingyang said, "Like a falcon taking a dove, you'd never see it coming. Only when it's tested before the emperor's tower do you learn it's the real thing."

The monk said, "In that case, I fold my hands at my chest and step back three paces."

Xingyang said, "You turtle hiding under Mount Sumeru, don't wait around to get your forehead branded again."

Verse

The silk-cord decree comes down. The order goes out, sharp and clear. Within the realm, the emperor; beyond the border, the general. He won't wait for thunder to startle the sleepers from the ground. What would he know of wind that halts the drifting clouds? At the loom of the moment, seamless: his own golden needle, his own jade thread. Before the seal, wide open: no curling bird-script, no fancy insect-script at all.
