49Dongshan's Memorial Portrait
Introduction
No sketch will catch it, no painting hold it. Puhua flips a somersault, Longya shows half a body. So in the end, what does that person look like?
Dongshan was making offerings before a portrait of his late teacher, Yunyan, and as he did he brought up the old story of the portrait.
A monk had once asked Yunyan, "When you said 'Just this is it,' what did you mean?"
Dongshan said, "Back then I nearly mistook my teacher's meaning."
The monk asked, "Did Yunyan know it himself, or not?"
Dongshan said, "If he didn't know it, how could he have said so? And if he did know it, why would he have put it that way?"
Verse
How could he have said so?
At the fifth watch the rooster crows, the home woods grow light.
Why would he have put it that way?
A thousand years, and the crane ages with the cloud-deep pine.
The precious mirror, clear and bright, tests upright against slanting.
The jade loom turns and tilts: watch both arrive at once.
The house style rings out, its measured steps unbroken.
Father to son the way runs through, sound and radiance vast.
