55Xuefeng Cooks the Rice

Introduction

Ice is colder than the water it came from. Blue outshines the indigo that made it. Only the student who surpasses the teacher is fit to carry on the line. A son who can't outdo his father: that's how a house falls in a single generation. So tell me, who is it that snatches the father's edge right out of his hands?

Xuefeng was the cook at Deshan's place. One day the meal ran late. Deshan came down to the hall carrying his bowls. Xuefeng said, "Old man, the bell hasn't rung, the drum hasn't sounded. Where do you think you're going with those bowls?" Deshan turned around and went back to his room.

Xuefeng told Yantou about it. Yantou said, "So even the great Deshan doesn't get the last word."

Deshan heard this and sent his attendant to fetch Yantou. He asked him, "You don't approve of me?" Yantou leaned in and whispered what he really meant. Deshan let it go.

The next day Deshan got up to teach, and sure enough it was nothing like usual. Yantou clapped his hands and laughed. "How about that, the old man's got the last word after all. From now on nobody in the world will be able to touch him."

Verse

The last word: has he got it or not? Deshan, father and son, left it murky. A man from down south sits in this very room, so don't sing the partridge song where he can hear.
