62Mihu Asks About Awakening
Introduction
Bodhidharma's "highest truth," and Emperor Wu's head went fuzzy. Vimalakirti's "gate beyond opposites," and even Manjushri said too much. So is there any way in at all?
Mihu sent a monk to put a question to Yangshan: "Do people these days still need to wake up, or not?"
Yangshan said, "Waking up, sure, that's real enough. But what do you do about landing one step short of it?"
The monk went back and reported this to Mihu, who gave it his deep approval.
Verse
One step short: there waking breaks the dark.
Quick, let go. Drop the net once you've got the fish.
Push the work too far and you grow a sixth finger;
even sharp wits can't see it, and then it's too late to gnaw your own navel.
The old rabbit on the icy moon weeps autumn dew;
a cold bird in the jade tree, the dawn wind keening.
Bring it to great Yangshan, he'll sort the true from the false:
not a flaw, not a stain, prized like white jade.
