66Jiufeng's Head and Tail

Introduction

The man of miraculous powers can't get his foot off the ground. The man who has dropped every thought and let go of it all can't get his foot up. So sometimes you run yourself to death, sometimes you sit yourself to death. How do you hit it just right?

A monk asked Jiufeng, "What is the head?"
Jiufeng said, "Open your eyes and still you miss the dawn."
The monk said, "What is the tail?"
Jiufeng said, "Don't sit on the thousand-year seat."
The monk said, "When there's a head but no tail?"
Jiufeng said, "Worth nothing in the end."
The monk said, "When there's a tail but no head?"
Jiufeng said, "Full, but no strength."
The monk said, "And when head and tail match exactly?"
Jiufeng said, "The children thrive, and in his room the old man never knows."

Verse

The compass turns the circle, the square sets the corner; used, you act; shelved, you lie low. A dull bird stalled in the reeds, a ram in the fence, no forward, no back. You eat at another man's house, you sleep in your own bed. Clouds climb and bring the rain, dew gathers and turns to frost. The jade thread meets its mark and slips through the needle's eye, the brocade strand never breaks, spun out from the shuttle's gut. The stone woman's loom falls still: night darkens toward noon. The wooden man rounds the bend: the moon's shadow slides to center.
