79Changsha's Hundred-Foot Pole

Introduction

The bride on the golden sands has a spirit all her own. Pound sticky rice cake inside a glass bottle: who dares stir it? Stay clear of the terrifying waves and you'll never land the fish you're after. So stride out, take the big step. What's the one line that does it?

Changsha sent a monk to question Master Hui.

"Before you met Nanquan," the monk asked, "how was it?"

Hui sat there a long time, saying nothing.

"And after you met him?" the monk asked.

"Nothing else to it," Hui said.

The monk went back and reported this to Changsha.

Changsha said, "The man sitting at the top of a hundred-foot pole has gotten somewhere, sure, but it isn't the real thing yet. At the top of the pole he still has to step forward. Then the whole universe is his own body."

"At the top of a hundred-foot pole," the monk said, "how do you step forward?"

"The mountains of Langzhou," Changsha said. "The waters of Lizhou."

"I don't get it."

"The four seas, the five lakes," Changsha said. "All of it under the emperor's rule."

Verse

The dreamer wakes at a single rooster's cry. One glance, and the whole world snaps into place. The storm keeps its promise, driving the sleepers from their dens. Peach and plum say nothing, yet the path wears itself to their door. When the season comes, lean into the plow. Who fears the spring fields, mud to the shins?
