87Shushan's Words and No-Words

Introduction

The gate is about to shut: one shove and it swings wide. The boat is about to sink: one push of the pole and it comes around. Drive the cart into the canyon and there's no road back. The arrow's notch points at the sky, and still one way leads through. So tell me: which way do you go?

Shushan came to Guishan and asked, "I've heard you say that words and no-words are like vines clinging to a tree. So when the tree suddenly falls and the vines wither, where do the words go?"

Guishan roared with laughter.

Shushan said, "I walked four thousand miles and sold the shirt off my back to get here. How can you just toy with me?"

Guishan called his attendant. "Bring money. Pay this fellow back." Then he told Shushan, "Someday a one-eyed dragon will crack this open for you."

Later Shushan came to Mingzhao and told him the story. Mingzhao said, "Guishan had it right, head to tail. He just never met anyone who could hear the tune."

Shushan asked again, "When the tree falls and the vines wither, where do the words go?"

Mingzhao said, "You'd only set Guishan laughing all over again."

At those words Shushan saw it. He said, "So all along there was a knife in that laugh."

Verse

Vines withered, tree down, he puts it to Guishan. That roaring laugh, and you call it idle? A knife in the laugh, once you see clean through: no road for words or thought, every trick cut off.
