95Linji's One Stroke

Introduction

Buddha walks in? Hit him. A demon walks in? Hit him. Right answer, thirty blows. Wrong answer, thirty blows. So is he mistaking friends for enemies? Or just refusing to sort the good from the bad? Say which. Look.

Linji asked the temple manager, "Where've you been?"

"Down in town, selling off the yellow rice."

"Sell all of it?"

"Every grain."

Linji drew a single line on the ground with his staff. "Can you sell this?"

The manager shouted.

Linji hit him.

Later the head cook came in, and Linji ran the story by him.

"The manager missed your point," the cook said.

"And you?" said Linji.

The cook bowed.

Linji hit him too.

Verse

Linji at full pitch, the key set high, an eye on the staff-tip reading a hair in autumn. He sweeps out fox and rabbit; the house style is fierce. Fish turn to dragons, scorched in lightning fire. A sword that gives life. A blade that takes it. Leaned on the sky, flashing on snow, keen enough to split a blown hair. One command goes out, and the taste of it is something else. The place it hurts the most: who's the one who takes it?
