5A Talk in the Hall

Zhaozhou took the high seat and said: "Brothers, don't just stand around. If you have something to settle, bring it. If not, go sit under your robe and bowl and work the thing through. That's the better use of your time. On the road, the only place I ever spent myself loosely was the two daily meals, gruel and rice. Beyond that, I wasted my mind nowhere. If you can't manage even that much, you left home for nothing."

A monk asked, "Of all things in the world, what is hardest?"
Zhaozhou said, "Curse me and I'll let you run your mouth. Spit at me and I'll let you throw your water."

A monk asked, "What about when it never stops, day or night?"
Zhaozhou said, "Among monks there's no peasant paying tax twice a year."

A monk asked, "What is the one phrase?"
Zhaozhou said, "Cling to one phrase and it will turn you old."

Zhaozhou went on: "Never leave the monastery your whole life, say nothing for ten years, five years, and no one will call you a mute. After that, even a buddha can do nothing with you. Don't believe me? Then cut off this old monk's head."
