17Fayan's Hair's Breadth
Introduction
Two lone geese beat their wings and climb. A pair of mandarin ducks stands apart by the pond. Two arrowheads meeting in midair — set that aside. When you saw a steelyard weight clean in two, then what?
Fayan asked Master Xiu, "A hair's breadth off, and heaven and earth split apart. How do you understand that?"
Xiu said, "A hair's breadth off, and heaven and earth split apart."
Fayan said, "If that's all you've got, where does it get you?"
Xiu said, "That's how I see it. And you?"
Fayan said, "A hair's breadth off, and heaven and earth split apart."
Xiu bowed.
Verse
A fly settles on the balance beam, and it tips.
A thousand ages of scales, every reading runs crooked.
Pounds and ounces, the finest grains, weighed dead-on:
in the end they all answer to my zero mark.
