18Zhaozhou's Dog
Introduction
A gourd on the water: press it and it spins away. A jewel in sunlight: its color keeps no fixed shape. You can't reach it by emptying the mind, and you can't grasp it by thinking. Even a giant of a man gets turned around in the twists of the words. Is there anyone who can slip the trap?
A monk asked Zhaozhou, "Does a dog have buddha-nature or not?"
Zhaozhou said, "Yes."
The monk said, "If it does, why is it stuffed into that bag of skin?"
Zhaozhou said, "Because it knew, and broke the rule on purpose."
Another monk asked Zhaozhou, "Does a dog have buddha-nature or not?"
Zhaozhou said, "No."
The monk said, "Every living thing has buddha-nature. Why not a dog?"
Zhaozhou said, "Because it still carries the karma of knowing."
