99Yunmen's Bowl and Bucket
Introduction
Chess takes its own kind of cunning. Drink takes its own kind of gut. The clever hare keeps three burrows; the sly clerk has a thousand ways to slip free. And there's one slipperier than any of them. Tell me, who?
A monk asked Yunmen, "What is the samadhi in which every speck of dust holds the whole world?"
Yunmen said, "Rice in the bowl, water in the bucket."
Verse
Rice in the bowl, water in the bucket.
Open your mouth and the whole of you shows.
Reach to know it, you've already missed;
start to think, you've split into two and three.
Meet it face to face
and at once it's a thousand miles off.
The master of Shaoyang had it near enough.
A bond that cuts through gold:
who else shares it?
A heart no force could turn:
he alone can be so.
